These four don't — flip any of them over and Cornerstone used the backs to tell you who actually built the thing, voice and all. I keep a small stack of this four-card grouping: the three 1994 Cornerstone foil inserts (Cards 1, 2 and 3), all Daleks, plus the separately-issued Davros foil (Foil 7).

🤖 The Daleks, Foils 1–3

Cards 1 through 3 are true foil inserts from Cornerstone's 1994 Doctor Who program — the ones that turned up loose inside packs rather than sitting in the regular base run. Each has a shiny foil finish and its own marbled border: blue-purple on Foil 1, orange-red on Foil 2, green on Foil 3. Every front carries the "DALEKS!" wordmark, the CCI monogram, and the licensed Doctor Who diamond logo.

🔹 Foil 1 — a lone Dalek down at the water's edge, with a big ornate suspension bridge arching over the river behind it. To my eye that's Hammersmith Bridge: the BBC took a Dalek down onto the Thames foreshore there in August 1964 to film one rising up out of the river for "The Dalek Invasion of Earth."

🔹 Foil 2 — the image everybody pictures the second you say "Dalek": a line of them crossing Westminster Bridge with the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben behind them. They really were out on that bridge, too: the BBC filmed Daleks on Westminster Bridge that same August for "The Dalek Invasion of Earth."

🔹 Foil 3 — a knot of Daleks massed together indoors, eyestalks and manipulator arms out.

The backs are where it gets good. Cornerstone used these three cards to print a proper three-chapter making-of, and it's genuinely one of my favorite pieces of card-back writing I own:

Foil 1, "Operators of the Daleks." A tip of the hat to the people nobody ever sees: the actors who climbed inside the Dalek casings and the voice artists behind that grating, staccato delivery. It names John Scott Martin — fourteen on-screen Dalek turns starting with "The Chase," across all seven Doctors — alongside Murphy Grumbar (who also went by Peter Murphy), Robert Jewell and Cy Town (eight apiece) and Gerald Taylor (seven). The busiest Dalek voices were Peter Hawkins, with eight performances, and Roy Skelton, with seven. And then there's my favorite line on the whole card: one of Doctor Who's most famous voice artists has only ever played a Dalek once — John Leeson, much better known as K9. I like picturing the world's most polite robot dog getting one single episode to shout "Exterminate!"

Foil 2, "Designer of the Daleks." This one's about Raymond P. Cusick, the BBC designer on a lot of the show's episodes from 1963 to 1966, who had to turn Terry Nation's script description into an actual, buildable prop that fit the budget. Cusick decided the operator should sit rather than stand, fully enclosed but still able to see out. The "skirt" was actually Nation's suggestion, and it was right in line with Cusick's own thinking — neither man wanted the wheels underneath showing, or, as the card puts it, the actor's legs! The card says he started from a sketch that looked a lot like a pepperpot or a salt cellar — which explains a fair bit about why the Daleks look the way they do.

Foil 3, "Creator of the Daleks." The third card belongs to writer Terry Nation, who dreamed the Daleks up in the first place. Best known for the Daleks and for the cult sci-fi series Blake's 7, he actually started out as a comedy writer, didn't even particularly want to write for Doctor Who, and ended up creating the Daleks for only the second story the show ever aired — originally titled "The Mutants," now just remembered as "The Daleks." It started going out on 21 December 1963, and the Daleks were an instant sensation: the last two episodes pulled 10.4 million viewers apiece, and Britain went into full-blown "Dalekmania." The Daleks gave the young show a huge boost and became its great recurring villains. Nation went on to write ten and a half Doctor Who adventures in total (the half is his six episodes of the twelve-part "The Daleks' Master Plan"), eight of them with the Daleks in, and one of those, "Genesis of the Daleks," introduced the creation the card calls his personal favorite: Davros.

🧬 And Then There's Davros (Foil 7)

Foil 7 finishes the thought: Davros himself, seated in his life-support chair with his creations ranked up behind him, on a green-and-purple marbled foil border with "DAVROS!" running up the side. It's a different kind of card from the other three in one important way — the Trading Card Database's own checklist for this release lists Foil 7 as a factory/direct-order card, not a random pack pull like Foils 1 through 3. So this set actually mixes two distribution types: three chase inserts you'd have found by tearing open packs, and one card that only went out with complete sets ordered straight from Cornerstone.

Flip it over and the back is headed "Davros Times Three" — a checklist of every Davros story up to 1994, BBC production codes and all, and the three actors who'd played him. Michael Wisher originated the part in 1975's "Genesis of the Daleks" (4E), the story that introduced the creation Nation called his favorite; the card points out Wisher turned up all over Doctor Who, on screen as the broadcaster in "The Ambassadors of Death" and as a voice actor, Dalek voices included. David Gooderson took over for 1979's "Destiny of the Daleks" (5J), doing Dalek voices in it too — his only Doctor Who serial. Then Terry Molloy made the role his own for all three 1980s Davros stories: "Resurrection of the Daleks" (6P, 1984), a Fifth Doctor story; "Revelation of the Daleks" (6Z, 1985), his second appearance of the Sixth Doctor's era after playing Russell, the undercover policeman in "Attack of the Cybermen"; and "Remembrance of the Daleks" (7H, 1988), which meant he'd played Davros opposite three different Doctors. And the card saves the best for last: Molloy also played the Emperor Dalek, who was secretly Davros himself. The BBC kept that twist quiet by crediting the Emperor on Part Three of "Remembrance" to a "Roy Tromelly" — Terry Molloy with the letters shuffled. This set's job is really to tell the Daleks' own story, with Davros standing at the end of it as the man who built them.

🔎 What's In This Set (and What Isn't)

Cornerstone's full 1994 foil program ran to seven cards — three Daleks, three Cybermen, and the one Davros. This listing is four of those seven: the three Daleks foils plus the Davros card. It does not include the three Cybermen foils. If you want the Cybermen too, look for the complete seven-card set; if what you're after is the Daleks' own arc — operators, designer, creator, and finally their creation's creator — this narrower four-card grouping tells that story on its own.

🏭 Cornerstone and the BBC License

The copyright lines are printed right on the cards: © 1994 Cornerstone Communications, Inc., the Doctor Who diamond logo © BBC 1973 and licensed by BBC Enterprises, and the Daleks and Davros credited to their creator, Terry Nation, 1994.

📦 Condition

These are New Old Stock. I keep a small stack of this set, and the photos show one example from it, not necessarily the best in the group — foil like this can pick up a scuff the moment it's handled, so what you get should sit at or above what's pictured: clean surfaces, sharp corners, foil that hasn't flaked or dulled.

Four cards, one story: the Daleks built by hidden hands and a hidden writer, and the man inside the story who built them.
