The Topps Company put those out in 1985 as a parody of the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls, with art from Art Spiegelman, Mark Newgarden, and painter John Pound. They settled with the Cabbage Patch people in 1986 and had to change the look. Schools banned the cards outright, which of course made every kid want one more, and there was even a movie in 1987 — one that's since landed on more than a few \"worst films ever made\" lists.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTrash Can Tots is one of the cheap vending-machine cousins that whole craze spawned — same idea of gross, pun-named little kids, aimed at the same crowd, on a fraction of the budget.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOver in the toy aisle, the mid-80s had its own version of the same joke: Madballs. They came from AmToy, the toy arm of American Greetings, out of a design team that really did call itself Those Characters From Cleveland, and they were foam rubber balls with gross-out faces and names to match. Slobulus had one eye hanging out of its socket, and Oculus Orbus was nothing but a bloodshot eyeball.
